You Have To See It To Believe It: Bar Featuring Social Distancing Tables

People will defintely stay six feet apart using these conversation pieces - that are also bringing smiles.

They look kinda like a cross between an innertube on four legs, a baby walker, and a carnival bumper car.

A bar in Ocean City Maryland has taken delivery of 10 "bumper tables," tables you stand inside of, with bumpers that will keep you 6 feet apart from everyone else.

The tables at Fish Tales are the brainchild of Revolution Event Design and Production. Company founder and CEO Erin Cermak is the cousin of Donna Harman who co-owns the bar and restaurant with her husband Shawn.

"Anything event related that's tied to creativity is what our niche is," Cermak told WBALTV.com. "When COVID hit, our phones weren't ringing off the hook, so we were trying to envision what events were going to look like … and figure out how people were going to be social and socially distant at the same time."

Shawn Harman loves what they came up with. "We've been brainstorming about how to make social distancing a little more safe so we can continue to serve our customers," he said on the restaurant's Facebook page. "We would really like the governor to allow us to start seating outside," Shawn Harman said. "(The tables) provide perfect social distancing for anyone using them and it protects both our staff and our customers."

Fish Tales, which usually opens for the season over Easter weekend, opened Friday for carryout only. For now, since they're not completely open, they'll have to wait to use the bumper tables. Still, the buzz over the strange looking mobile devices has already gotten the restaurant a lot of publicity.

"It has turned out to be, if nothing else, a tremendous marketing event," Harman admitted. "We have plans to order some more."

Cermak at Revolution said there's been demand from other venues for the tables, which can be ordered and custom made.
