WWII Veteran's Request for 100 Cards for His 100th Birthday Goes Viral
When the folks at his senior living facility found out what he wanted for his birthday, they didn't hesitate to help him reach his goal.
Mr. James South of Watauga, TX is turning 100-years-old next month, and he wants you to help him celebrate the milestone. The World War II Veteran will be celebrating this very special birthday on October 7th. Officials at the Brookdale Senior Living facility where South lives posted a photo to Facebook of him smiling and holding a handwritten sign.

The sign reads, "Hello! My name is James South and I am a proud World War II Veteran! I will be turning 100 on October 7th, 2019 and I would like to receive 100 birthday cards. Please mail to: 5800 North Park Dr., Watauga, TX 76148. Thank you!"
South is a proud U.S. Army veteran who was deployed to Normandy seven days after D-Day. He's had a love of letters and cards since his wife Sophie (who was his girlfriend at the time) wrote to him every day while he was overseas. He was married to Sophie for 55 years until she passed away in 2001.

After retiring at age 65, South has stayed busy by woodworking, tending to his garden and going to church, his son Jim South said. He moved to Brookdale last year, at the age of 98.
Jim South has a three-day celebration planned for his dad's big day that includes playing golf, hanging with family and eating at his dad's favorite restaurants. He said his dad plans to hang the cards he receives on the wall in his room at the assisted living facility.
"My dad taught me that a hug is better than a handshake," Jim said. "And that money wasn't the goal in life - it was happiness."
The post made by Brookdale has gone viral, prompting over 2,000 shares and 288 comments. Most commenters thanked South for his service and many promised to follow up with a card.
We're sure he'll reach his goal of 100 cards and then some, hopefully, the wall in his room is large enough to hold them all!
