"Wonder Dog" Saves Hundreds Of Sheep From Australian Bushfire

Thanks to the pup's quick actions, more than 220 sheep survived the blaze.

As dozens of bushfires continue to burn in Australia, people are doing whatever they can to save their homes from being destroyed. One farm owner recently got help from a four-legged friend when a large blaze hit his family's farm on New Year's Eve.

When Stephen Hill saw the wildfire quickly approaching his sister's farm in Corryong (a small town in Victoria) he jumped on a four-wheeler and one of the farm dogs, Patsy, hopped into his lap. The two drove out to the area where the sheep were grazing, and without a word, the 6-year-old shepherd mix rounded up the animals and ushered them safely into a nearby barn while Hill fought back the flames with a tractor and a water pump.

Although a few sheep didn't make it, thanks to Patsy's help most of the herd was saved.

"If you haven't got a good dog, you can't do so much with the sheep," Hill (pictured below with Patsy) told NBC News . "They're really difficult to move in any way, shape or form unless you have a good dog."

Hill credits the dog's calmness and excellent night vision as essential to getting the sheep to safety, despite the smoke and heat from the fire.

After the fire, word got out about the dog's heroic deed and people all over the world wanted to know more about the “Corryong Wonderdog" who helped save a farm from devastation. Not one to disappoint her adoring fans, Patsy's owner created an Instagram page for the pooch with photos and videos of her daily adventures as a farm pup.

As for Hill, he says Patsy has earned her keep. “She rides in the front of the ute for the rest of her life with me," he said with a chuckle. “She never has to worry about going in the back."

If you would like to help Patsy's community recover from the fires, you can consider donating to any of these fundraisers (all verified by the pup's family!)
