Uniquely Pittsburgh Ideas for Your "Galentine's Day"

Why not support Pittsburgh businesses and non-profits while you bond with your girlfriends on this Valentine's Day alternative holiday?

Are you and a group of girlfriends celebrating Galentine's Day this year? The official date for the made-up holiday is February 13 but it can be celebrated anytime around Valentine's day -- the day or weekend before or after are popular. The holiday was created on the popular sit-com Parks and Recreation, where Amy Pohler's character Leslie Knope throws an annual party for female friends the day before Valentine's Day.

If you're thinking brunch or a spa day, we bet you already have a favorite spot. But if you're looking for something different, we thought you might like some uniquely Pittsburgh things to give and do.

"Welcome to Our Table" Cookbook

Pittsburgh Penguins wives and girlfriends have created a special cookbook for charity with over 70 recipes accompanied by personal pictures and stories. The 152-page hardcover cookbook features some of the Pens players' favorite dishes, such as Russian Pancakes and Mediterranean Marinated Flank Steak, plus (of course!) some health-conscious options. Proceeds from sales of the cookbook, published in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, will support an angel fund to benefit non-profits in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. Click here to find out how to purchase it by mail, or you can find it at the Penguins Foundation Stand located behind Section 104 and at PensGear locations.

love, Pittsburgh Gift Shop

This wonderful shop features unique items made by Pittsburgh crafts people (yes, it's supposed to be a lower case "l" in "love"). Your Galentine would surely luxuriate in the tub or shower with a bar of Blood Orange Pittsburgh Sky Soap . Inspired by a Pittsburgh Sky, scented with blood orange and more, says the website, the 4 oz handmade soap bar is vegan. How about something to decorate her home? We liked the Pittsburgh A-to-Z print . This 11" x 17" print matches an iconic Pittsburgh item with each letter of the alphabet with a fun graphic design (B is for bridges, I for Incline, K shows the iconic Kennywood arrow, etc.). love, Pittsburgh has two stores, one on Shiloh Street on Mt. Washington and another on Liberty Avenue Downtown, in the heart of the Cultural District (click here for addresses and phone numbers)

Moonlight Yoga

Join the Heinz History Center in the Strip, in partnership with Pittsburgh Yoga Events & Athleta for what they describe as a "fresh and fun" yoga experience the evening before Valentine's Day. A certified vinyasa yoga instructor will lead you and your friends through a 60-minute flow, with a special emphasis on heart-opening poses. Then enjoy a moon-inspired cocktail, space-themed snacks, and after-hours access to the Smithsonian's Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission exhibition, featuring the original command module Columbia. You're encouraged to wear "heart" colors like pink, red and purple. Click here for tickets.

Volunteer with the "Gals"

Because we're Sparkt and we love it when you give something back to the community, why not gather up your group and volunteer? Here are some of our favorite opportunities from Sparkt's 25 Days of Volunteering in December. All are easy to do as one-day opportunities, but we hope you'll fall in love with the organization and keep on volunteering. Note: some do require pre-registration -- we've got the links in each article.

Make "Meals from the Heart" : Prepare and serve a meal for families staying at Ronald McDonald House while their children are treated in at local hospitals.

Make Yourself an ASSET to a Girl's Future : Sort and package STEM materials to help school-age girls (and guys) get the education they need for the jobs of the future.

Throw a Diaper Party : did you know there's a diaper crisis? Between the high cost and the fact that food stamps don't cover them, low-income families can't afford diapers for their children. If you're getting together with your friends for Galentine's Day have everyone bring a pack of diapers and donate them.

As Leslie Knope once said, Galentine's day is "only the best day of the year." We hope these ideas make a day of celebrating the love you hae for your friends extra-special this year.
