Uber Driver Buys New Baby Clothes for Mother of Sick Infant

When she found out her passenger was alone in the city and tending to a sick newborn in the hospital, she didn't hesitate to help.

When Nikki Ihus got into an Uber last week in St. Petersburg, FL, she didn't know that she would be getting much more than just a ride.

Ihus had been spending her days at John Hopkins All Children's Hospital where her newborn son, John Henry, is being treated for a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). CDH causes a large hole in the diaphragm which allows the baby's organs to get into the chest cavity and can have harmful effects on the lungs. CDH is a life-threatening condition for babies, however the medical team at John Hopkins is among the best in the country, so Ihus traveled from her home in Kansas to have her son treated there.

After John Henry's surgery, Ihus needed to go out and buy more clothes and baby supplies, so she ordered an Uber. When she got into the car, it didn't take long for her to open up to the driver and tell her what was going on.

"She needed to talk and I was there to listen," the driver, Belinda, told WFTS-TV .

Ihus told her about John Henry's condition and how hard it was being alone and so far away from home.

"I cried a lot," Nikki said.

When they pulled up to the store, the two said goodbye and Ihus went inside to do her shopping. But Belinda didn't leave. Instead, she parked her car and went into the store to find Ihus.

"She touched my heart," Belinda, who is also a mother, said. "This is a day that should be fun for you," she told Nikki. "And you shouldn't be alone. Let's shop."

Belinda ended up buying almost an entire new wardrobe for John Henry, but, more importantly, she showed kindness to a new mom who was scared, lonely and homesick.

"I mean, for her to come and be with me for a couple of hours while we shopped together, that was just incredible." - Nikki Ihus

Nikki invited Belinda to visit them in the hospital later that week and she got to meet John Henry for the first time.

Nikki Ihus (L) made a lifelong friend when Uber driver Belinda (R) picked her up and went shopping with her to buy baby clothes.

"He's so beautiful," Belinda gushed.

John Henry will likely be in the NICU for months, so Ilhus' family set up a GoFundMe page to help support them after Nikki's short term disability runs out in November. You can contribute to the campaign by clicking here .
