Tough Army Guy Shows He Has a Softer Side

Caught on tape moment shows what happens when he goes head to head with a boy who shows he's pretty tough too!

When you're a big, tough, strong Army guy, it would be easy to have a big ego to match. But Capt. Chandler Smith couldn't be further from that stereotype, as he demonstrated in a sweet video that just hit Facebook.

Smith is a member of the Army Warrior Fitness Team and participates in fitness competitions around the world. One of those was The Fittest Experience , held earlier this year in Austin, TX. Thousands competed in qualifiers, but only a fraction made it to the finals, including Capt. Smith.

Since The Fittest Experience bills itself as family friendly, thousands of spectators, including kids, come to watch the competition. One of them was a young boy named Kyren, who challenged Capt. Smith to a burpee contest. Watch what happened:

That Capt. Smith has such a kind heart comes as no surprise to those who know him. In an article about his participation in another competition, the CrossFit Games (pictured below), Smith told the Army.mil website he looked forward to representing the Army to the best of his ability on a national stage. "My goals at the CrossFit Games are reflective of my Army career goals as a whole," Smith said. "I want to do something at the games that [helps] the Army, and the world, become a better place."

A leader on his wrestling team in high school, Smith chose to to attend college at West Point because he wanted the discipline, challenge and the humility it would bring. Just as he worked to be a positive example there, he's dedicated to continuing to use his talents and gifts to make a difference.

His mates can see it in everything he does. "Captain Chandler Smith is not only a great Soldier, but he is a great person," said Master Sgt. Glenn Grabs, who has had a chance to work out with Smith.

"When I see him interact with people at competitions or in public, he goes the extra step to connect with people."

"That's just who he is as a person and what makes him so remarkable," added Grabs. We think there's one young man in Texas who also thinks Chandler Smith is pretty remarkable! And we do too!
