Tony Winner Leslie Odom Jr. Will Give CMU Commencement Address

"Hamilton" star returns to his alma mater to address the Class of 2019.


Grammy and Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. will return to his alma mater this spring to deliver the keynote address at Carnegie Mellon University�s 122nd Commencement.

Odom Jr., who is best known for originating the role of Aaron Burr in the megahit Broadway musical �Hamilton,� earned his bachelor�s degree from CMU�s College of Fine Arts in 2003.

Odom Jr.�s performance as Aaron Burr won him the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He was won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast recording of �Hamilton.�

"Leslie's award-winning acting and music has inspired millions and the CMU community is immensely proud of his success as an alumnus on Broadway, in the recording studio and as a writer," said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. "His talent and perseverance set a great example for our graduates as they prepare to enter the next chapter in their lives.�

Odom Jr. was born in Queens, NY and grew up in Philadelphia before attending Carnegie Mellon. In addition to his work in theater, he has appeared in film and television and has released two solo jazz albums.

Carnegie Mellon�s Commencement ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 19, in Gesling Stadium on campus.
