Students Show School’s Custodian How Much He's Appreciated

They were assigned to write "kindness letters" and knew immediately they'd write theirs to him.

Two eighth grade students at J. Frank Dobie High School in Cibolo, TX are showing that kindness matters, no matter your age.

Johanna Madrigal and Izzy Gauna recently wrote "kindness letters" to Michael Carson, the school's custodian. They say Carson (aka "Mr. Mike") is always there to listen when they need to talk, and that his presence makes the school a better place.

"He always comes with a smile. That's always nice and warms our hearts," Gauna told KENS5-TV.

When the girls got the assignment in one of their classes to write a kindness letter to someone, they knew just who to choose.

"Dear Mr. Mike," Johanna's letter reads. "You are the most sweetest person I have ever met. Thank you so much for always being by everybody's side when they need you. I really appreciate everything that you do for me and the other kids. I love you so much."

Mr. Mike, who has worked at the school for 17 years, says his favorite part of his job is talking with the students and getting to know them personally.

"Sometimes they'll get serious with you and they want you to give them serious answers," he said. "Other times, they just want you to kid around with them."

When Mr. Mike got the students' letters, he was touched.

"It means so much," he said. "It makes your job a little easier when people appreciate what you do for them."

While Johanna and Izzy are aware that people can do a lot more to thank Mr. Mike for his friendship, they also know it's the smallest acts that often mean the most.

"The simplest little words can have the largest impact on people and maybe even leave a print on their heart," Izzy said.

What an inspiring gesture from caring students who wanted their friend to know how much they appreciate him. We're sure Mr. Mike will keep their letters close for a long time to come!
