Payne's favorite sneakers were stolen from his office last week, so to cheer him up his students pitched in over $100 to buy him a new pair.
The TikTok video shows the students surrounding Payne after they present him with a gift bag and card. When he sees the shoebox in the bag, he looks at his students in disbelief.
"Are you serious?" he asks them.
When he opens the box and sees the new sneakers inside, he breaks down in tears. One of the students exclaims, "You're gonna make me cry!"
The teacher looks around at his students at a loss for words. After a moment, another student shouts, "Group hug!" and the kids rush to embrace him.
Payne's students chipped in $115 for the Nike Zoom KD12 basketball shoes, which Payne uses when he referees the varsity games. He teaches a Life Skills class at the school.
The video already has over a million views and hundreds of comments praising both the teacher and the students.

"Clearly the culture in this classroom has nurtured deep mutual respect. The lessons being learned extend well beyond the standard curriculum. Great to see," user Craig M. Meredith wrote.
