Students Raise Money to Buy Janitor a New Truck
They figured why not "go big" when it came to honoring their favorite worker at school.
Sometimes, the work of those around us goes unnoticed. That can certainly be the case for school janitors who often work tirelessly to make sure that schools are up to code and sanitary for students.
That's why two sophomores at Jasper High School in Jasper, AL decided to do something special for their school's janitor last week in honor of National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day.
Travis Kennedy has worked at JHS for over 22 years, and his impact on the students hasn't gone unnoticed.
"He's a great example of the 'Viking Way' here at Jasper- which is summed up with humility, and he is always working with a smile. When you come up to him and say 'Hey!', he will always tell you something about the gospel, a great quality to have, and that;s what stood out to me," one of the sophomore students, Preston Reed, told CBS42-TV .
Reed, along with Sam Hice, decided to start a fundraiser to buy a new pickup truck for Kennedy, who has been driving the same vehicle since he started working at the school. They posted a GoFundMe page and have been able to raise over $13,000 so far. A local car dealership has agreed to match their donation amount up to $10,000.
When Kennedy heard about what the students were doing, he was brought to tears.
"I didn't know I was impacting them. But, you know, you got to live truthful. You've got to be honest. You have to try to do things right. And I was made to do that." - Travis Kennedy
Kennedy commutes 20 miles a day to work at JHS, so the students thought a new truck would be life changing for him. They hope to raise $20,000 to buy him the truck of his dreams.
