State Holding Public Meeting on Proposed Fracking
DEP will hear comments on proposal for Mon Valley site.
This week, you have the chance to share your thoughts with state regulators on proposed Marcellus Shale fracking on U.S. Steel Corp's Edgar Thomson steel mill site in the Monongahela Valley.
The state Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. DEP says it will present information and take questions about Merrion Oil & Gas' fracking application. DEP says it has invited representatives from Merrion Oil & Gas, U.S. Steel and the Allegheny County Health Department.
According to the Post-Gazette, Merrion has leased the site from U.S. Steel and plans to drill as many as five additional wells. The wells would be drilled vertically about 6,000 feet below the surface and then have extended laterals of 8,500 to 10,000 feet horizontally. Approximately 21,000 people live within a 2-mile radius of the proposed shale gas drilling site.
DEP told the Post-Gazette it has already received approximately two dozen letters in opposition to the project.
The meeting is at the Braddock Volunteer Fire Department #2 Social Hall located at 845 Talbot Avenue in Braddock. Doors will open at 5:30 PM and pre-registration is not required.
