Special Needs Drum Corps Will Compete at World Championships

A special needs drum corps will make history this summer, when they compete in the world championships in Williamsport, PA.
CBS New York reports the FREE Players Drum & Bugle Corp has been invited to perform and compete at the Drum Corps Associates World Championships . They will be the first group made up of individuals with special needs to take part in the prestigious competition, and some members will perform solos.
"It doesn't matter what your instrument is, or your disability is, or your talent is," group member Thomas Woodiwiss told CBS New York.
The group is from Long Island, NY, and is part of the theater day-program at the non-profit Family Residences and Essential Enterprises . The group has weekly rehearsals and regularly performs at parades, festivals and competitions. The DCA World Championships are held from Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
According to their website, FREE Players Drum & Bugle Corps was developed to help program participants achieve their goals and dreams through Music Education, equipment instruction and inclusive community-based performance and travel opportunities . Members grow musically and socially while building independence, life skills, job skills, memories and friendships.
