Sparkt Staff Write Holiday Cards For Shut-ins

As you Start Something Good where you live, we are too!

Some people wish for extravagant gifts at the holidays. Others would be happy with something as simple as a visit, or a card that says someone cares. That's the focus of the Meals on Wheels program, and an effort by many chapters to deliver hand-written cards with meals during the holidays.

The Sparkt staff stepped up to help out, signing and writing personal notes on nearly 100 cards that will be distributed by Meals on Wheels volunteers in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh. "It only took a few minutes, and knowing one card could make someone's holiday really made it worth it," said Sparkt Community Manager Amanda Fox.

Meals on Wheels is a national organization that marshals volunteers to visit shut-in seniors every weekday,, bringing a hot meal and a few minutes of conversation, which may be the only outside contact many seniors will have each day. If you think something that basic isn't needed, consider these statistics from the Meals on Wheels organization about the hunger and isolation many seniors feel:

  • 7.1 million seniors live in poverty
  • 1 in 4 seniors lives alone
  • 1 in 5 seniors feels lonely

At Sparkt we we welcomed the chance to make a difference in people's lives by volunteering to write holiday cards. "My grandmother died this year," said Sparkt Chief Marketing Officer Ange Knox. "Sending some joy and love to another grandmother meant a lot to me."
