Ryan Shazier Shares Inspiring Workout Video as Recovery Continues

The Steeler linebacker clears a 3 foot box jump, more than a year after spinal injury.

Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier continues to amaze and inspire, 16 months after an attempted tackle left him unable to walk, lying on the turf at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.

Shazier shared a video on Instagram, which shows him clearing a three-foot box jump with just the help of a spotter behind him. It is the latest in an awe-inspiring series of milestones since the gruesome injury.

Shazier's father, Vernon, tells ESPN that his son accomplished the impressive box jump in stages.

"The first boxes were a lot lower than that," the elder Shazier said. "It all began with just trying to jump -- no box. It slowly graduated to what you see in that video."

As of Monday afternoon, the video had nearly 500,000 views.

Ryan Shazier had spinal stabilization surgery following his injury, and there was a fear he could be paralyzed for life. But in the time since he has re-taught himself to walk, drive a car and lift weights. Less than a year ago, Shazier walked on stage to announce the Steelers' first-round pick at the NFL Draft.

In January, Shazier and his wife welcomed a son, Lyon Carter Shazier.

Through his recovery, Shazier continues to inspire his teammates and NFL fans. @shazier on Instagram

Last month the Steelers announced they will keep Shazier on the roster for the 2019 season, even though he won't be taking the field. Shazier will be paid a salary commensurate with his years' service in the NFL, which is around $805,000 a year according to Mark Kaboly of the The Athletic. Shazier will also continue to accrue seasons toward an NFL pension, and will keep his health insurance.
