Roland Ford Wants You to Dance and Be Fit
One Pittsburgh man is bringing accessible dance lessons to the city, one neighborhood at a time.
Take care of your body and your body will take care of you.
These are Roland Ford's words to live by. Roland has been teaching soul line dance classes to seniors in the Pittsburgh area every summer for the past few years. While his summer events tend to take place outdoors, he has taught lessons at schools, churches and community centers throughout the region. A recent lesson at the West End Overlook consisted of a small group of seniors who followed Ford's lead and danced along to current hip hop and R&B hits. They were all smiles.
Ford doesn't just offer his Dance and Be Fit workouts to seniors, he caters to a wide population including those that are deaf/hard of hearing, preschoolers, individuals in wheelchairs or have other physical disabilities and working professionals who need to "turn up."
"Dancing is universal," says Ford. "It's something that everyone enjoys doing."
