Race To Complete Dream Home For 9/11 Volunteer With Cancer

Just days after being hospitalized in his cancer battle, Nick Ursta is released while volunteers race to complete the Ursta family dream home.

Nick Ursta is a fighter. This man put his own life on the line when he and his wife joined the White Oak, PA fire company volunteering in the rubble at Ground Zero after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Now he's continuing to fight the cancer caused by his exposure all those years ago. Sadly, Nick's battle is nearing its end. There is good news to report... Nick is now resting at his mother's home in White Oak.

I got to visit him this afternoon where he's resting and getting oxygen and medication to ease his pain. He's trying to hang on to get into the dream home that is nearly complete for his wife Margaret. She even took a carpet sample to Nick (pictured above) to show him what just happened today... thanks to our latest volunteer angel, Pat Molyneaux and his flooring company. They both joined me for an update on Nick and a tour of the house just outside McKeesport:

The effort is all thanks to volunteers who have shelled out tens of thousands of dollars not to mention their own blood, sweat, and tears doing the work.

Special thanks to:

  • TUDI Mechanical Systems: They installed a brand new furnace and donated the entire system as part of their Heat For The Needy program.
  • Kevin Anglum and Tony Napolitano: These retired contractors have done the walls and ceilings drywall and sheet rock with additional volunteer assistance from the Carpenters and Joiners Union .
  • Maury Burgwin, President of the Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce : Burgwin is working with area businesses on materials and labor.
  • Anonymous: A mystery man paid for the roofing job installed by Nicolella Roofing .
  • Matt Mertz Plumbing : They have done a complete job of running all of the plumbing and making sure it's all up to code. It took a week of work and they didn't ask for a penny.
  • Michael Jacobs, President and Owner of Marvista Kitchen and Bath . Jacobs' team is working on the dream kitchen and bathrooms for Nick and Margaret.
  • 84 Lumber has donated the siding and materials to finish the exterior of the Ursta home.
  • Richard Garland and his volunteers from The Blessing Board are taking care of the labor, installing siding on all sides of the Ursta home.
  • Dan Horhut and his crew from Horthut Tree Experts cleaned up the piles and piles of debris from the trees and shrubbery that was removed from the yard.
  • Pat Molyneaux and his team at Molyneaux Tile Carpet Wood for taking care of the carpeting throughout the home.

Our apologies if we're missing anyone, but you get the picture of the not-so-small army that's coming together to help the Ursta's get their dream home finished. We're going to make sure that it gets done as Nick continues to fight the good fight with his cancer.
