Puppet Slam in Pittsburgh Happening This Weekend
While some may think of puppetry as a lost art, there are still plenty of strings being pulled in Pittsburgh.
The fourth annual Summer Family Puppet Slam 'n Picnic is taking place this weekend in the Pittsburgh, PA neighborhood of Spring Hill.
Presented by the Puppetry Guild of Pittsburgh, the event will be hosted by Tom Sarver and Dave English and will feature a variety of short acts including marionettes, giant puppets, hand puppets, and shadow puppets.
"The short skits will keep the audience engaged, especially the children."
"Kids love imagination. And we love that this is not a formal theater space. It allows us to break the fourth wall," the imaginary wall that separates actors and actresses from the audience.
The event will kick off with an interactive dance experience with the Giant Puppet Dance Club, who won a micro-grant from the Awesome Foundation in 2018. Lawrenceville artist Kirsten Ervin will present her puppet show/musical, "Hippies in Space," and Buffalo Township artist Darlene Thompson will be performing two scenes from her play, "Penelope's Dragon."
There will be puppet costumes on hand for kids and adults to try on and learn some basic puppeteering moves, and a puppet-themed bake sale with all proceeds benefiting the Puppetry Guild. If you have your own favorite puppet, they're even encouraging you to bring it. There will also be food trucks and local brews on hand to take care of the picnic part.
