Principal Surprises Student At Drive-Thru To Tell Her She’s Valedictorian

Watch how the principal shares the good news and the student's sweet reaction.

As schools across the country extend closures for at least another month to stop the spread of the coronavirus, the reality is sinking in that high school seniors will most likely be missing out on their graduation ceremonies.

That didn't stop one high school principal from making sure her student got the recognition she deserves.

Michelle Floering, the secondary principal at Grand Traverse Academy in Traverse, MI, wanted to tell senior Kaitlyn Watson the good news that she earned the title of this year's valedictorian. Floering wanted to surprise the teen in person, so she filmed a video of her going through the drive-thru at the fast food restaurant where Watson works.

When Floering pulled up to the drive-thru window, she asked to speak with Kaitlyn. When she appeared at the window a moment later, Floering let her know she was there to let her know something important.

"I've got you on camera because I want to announce something to you today," Floering said in the video.

"You are GTA's 2020 class valedictorian," a grinning Floering continued.

Kaitlyn excitedly responded, "I am? Thank you so much!"

Floering said she wished she could give the teen a hug, but due to the coronavirus she was staying 6 feet away.

"I couldn't wait to come and tell you," she told her student, who still seemed a bit shocked by the announcement.

The video was later shared on the school's Facebook page, where it earned a flurry of positive comments from others in the district and was shared over a hundred times.

"Add THIS to the numerous reasons I LOVE my kids' school! Congrats Kaitlyn," one person wrote.

"This brought tears to my eyes!! So sweet of you to do this, Michelle Floering!! and Congrats to Kaitlyn," another person commented.

Kudos to Principal Floering for going the extra mile to deliver the good news to her student. We're sure it made Watson's day!

How can you start something good?

While the closures that are happening as a result of the coronavirus are affecting everyone, we're sure it's especially hard for students who are missing out on some important milestones.

Even if you're not a high school principal, you can still let the students in your life know that you care. If you know of anyone who's graduating this year, make an effort to reach out and congratulate them.

You can consider sending them a small gift or an e-card, or you can simply call and wish them well. Any bit of positivity helps right now.
