The Pittsburgh Penguins take their role in the community seriously. They're also passionate about growing the game of hockey. That's what prompted their "Learn to Play Dek Hockey" program. The program, which has locations all across the region, launched last year and offers kids a free opportunity to learn and play the game.
Participating kids get a free helmet, stick, gloves, shin guard and t-shirt. That's a big help since hockey can be an expensive sport, which can be a barrier for a child whose family can't afford it.
With help from the NHL Industry Growth Fund, approximately 1,000 children received free equipment and lessons in the first year of the program. Each location offers six learn to play sessions designed to introduce beginners to the sport of dek hockey in a fun and safe environment. Boys and girls ages 4 to 9 are encouraged to come try.
