New Oakmont Bakery Opens, Sparkt Goes "Back Stage"

The new Oakmont Bakery opened today, aiming to be a destination for pastry lovers throughout the region. Owner Marc Serrao talks about how he's feeling and takes us behind the scenes.

"It's exactly what I dreamed it would be. It really is." That's how my buddy Marc Serrao told me he was feeling today as he, his family, friends and employees cut the ribbon on their new 95,000 square foot Oakmont Bakery

It's just a couple of blocks away from the old bakery, but it's light years away in terms of what you'll find inside. Marc showed me everything when he took me on a personal tour (yeah, even the bathrooms--you're gonna love the technique they used to etch the glass on the doors).

It took years to plan the new bakery. Even putting together the piece of land they needed to build took a huge effort by the local leaders in town. Marc told me even the construction was kind of a family/neighborhood affair. General contractor PW Campbell has their headquarters right across the Hulton Bridge in RIDC Park. Marc's brother did the plumbing, and a life-long friend from high school did the landscaping. They thought of everything -- there's even a fireplace, a big-screen, and cozy chairs in the cafe.

So how'd they move everything from the old bakery to the new one in time for the ribbon cutting? Let's just say we heard that employees were wheeling stuff down the street in the middle of the night! And that doesn't count the employees who baked all night to make sure the cases were full in time for the grand opening. Marc says it was all hands on deck.

I've followed Marc through this whole thing. I don't think I've seen him smile as much as he did today. Maybe it's the because the weight of this big project is off his shoulders. Or maybe it's just the joy of knowing he's going to make a lot of people happy. "This is a happy business," Marc told me right after the ribbon cutting. "With all the terrible things that go on in the world, but when people come in here they're just buying a pastry or a cake. If it's a happy moment or a happy 10 minutes," he's done his job.

"Our mission statement is 'We create delicious memories' and I believe that with all my heart." Marc Serrao, Oakmont Bakery
