New Jersey Pizzeria Comes to the Aid of Missing Pet Owners

After being reminded how devastating having a pet go missing can be, a NJ pizzeria owner rallies the community to help.

John Sanfratello, owner of Angelo's Pizza in Matawan, New Jersey, has started to include missing pet flyers in his pizza boxes to help spread the word when peoples' pets go missing. Sanfratello was inspired to help when he saw a lost pet flyer with a photo of a cat that looked strikingly similar to his own family pet, Max, who went missing himself once for over a week.

"Growing up, we used to have missing children on milk cartons," Sanfratello told Good Morning America . "Why can't the pizza box be the milk carton of today, but for animals?"

After a post on Angelo's Pizza's Facebook page calling for missing pet flyers was shared over 1,500 times, the inquiries and comments came pouring in. Most notably, one woman from The Seeing Eye dog training school in Morristown, New Jersey reached out about a missing German Shepherd puppy named Ondrea. The pup had gone missing in June and was slated to begin formal guide dog training to be a seeing eye dog for the blind later in the month.

Sanfratello features Ondrea.

Sanfratello was quick to include posters of Ondrea in his pizza boxes to help in the search. He also sent out posters for two other pets - a Maltese pup named Cici and a cat called Opu.

Family members of Sanfratello have joined the cause including his sister, Rosalia Di Fede, who shared a similar post on her restaurant's Facebook page and started including flyers in her to-go boxes.

"We need to find as many pets as we can," Sanfratello said. "And we need to raise awareness, so that hopefully more businesses become involved on a local level."

As of July 24, the Seeing Eye has yet to find Ondrea. If you're in the New Jersey area and recognize her, please refer to the following info:

  • The Seeing Eye is offering a $5,000 for the safe return of Ondrea
  • Additional $1,000 reward is offered on the following anonymous tip line: 973-300-CRIME
  • The Seeing Eye will take her back with no questions asked.
