New Electronic Card Makes it Easier to Access Family Nutrition Benefits

Governor Tom Wolf announced that Pennsylvania's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will now offer an electronic transfer (eWIC) card.

Families will soon have a new and easier way to access their government nutrition benefits. Governor Tom Wolf announced that Pennsylvania's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will now offer an electronic transfer (eWIC) card.

"The eWIC card will allow families quick, easy and convenient shopping for food, and will get rid of paper checks," said Department of Health Deputy Secretary Dr. Loren Robinson. The new cards will be rolled out in four central-PA counties, and eventually be available all over the state.

WIC users will save time at the checkout with the eWIC card while also being able to buy WIC-qualified food in as many shopping trips as they want throughout the month. In addition to the eWIC card, participants will have access to a new WICShopper Smart Phone App, which is designed to scan a product's bar code to determine if it's a WIC-allowed food.

The WIC program in Pennsylvania serves more than 205,000 pregnant women, infants and children under age 5 each year. It's estimated that WIC families spend $248 million a year with their WIC food benefits.
