Mom of Sick Teen Asks People to Send Him Birthday Cards
When her son told her he had enough of life, she knew she had to do something to cheer him up.
Rhys Williams hasn't had an easy life. When most kids his age are attending junior high and playing sports, Rhys is mostly stuck indoors. He suffers from a rare skin disorder called epidermolysis bullosa where even the lightest of physical contact can cause bruising and pain. The condition leaves sores all over his body and has even fused his fingers together.
Most of Rhys' waking hours are spent indoors, playing Xbox. He typically doesn't want to go outside for fear of being made fun of for his appearance, and since he is fed through a tube he can't really travel too far from home.

Recently, a depressed Rhys told his mother, Tanya, that he is sick of living with a chronic disease and that he has "had enough of life." (We can hear her heart breaking from here.)
"He's such a happy boy most of the time, but recently it's a struggle to try and get through to him," Tanya explained.
"I don't want him to be in pain anymore, but I still want him to be here." - Tanya Williams
A few weeks ago, Tanya posted to Facebook that her son's birthday was coming up, and that she thought he would be cheered by receiving cards from all over the world. On September 7, Tanya posted an update that she (along with a few helpers) had opened almost 10,000 cards so far, with many more to go.
"Had to rope in help to open the huge amount of cards received today," she wrote. "Twenty-one boxes contain just over 5,000 cards. Still two sacks from yesterday and two sacks from today to go through. Yesterday was 10 boxes, roughly 4,000 cards. I reckon we will hit 10 thousand once I've finished."

Judging by a photo Tanya recently posted of a smiling Rhys surrounded by boxes and mail sacks overflowing with cards, her plan to cheer him up is working.
