The strength of Pittsburgh will be displayed in Jerusalem forever, thanks to a memorial plaque established to remember the 11 Jewish victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in October.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto traveled to Jerusalem to visit the memorial, which honors the victims of the tragedy and is located at the 9/11 Living Memorial Plaza created by the Kayemet LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) and Jewish National Fund (JNF-USA).

Peduto said he felt a sense of responsibility to see the memorial in person because of his close connection to the Tree of Life Synagogue. "I have a long history with the Tree of Life congregation; I knew some of the victims personally," Peduto told the Jewish News Syndicate . After touring the 9/11 Living Memorial Plaza, the mayor planted an olive tree near the Tree of Life plaque, symbolizing peace and continuity.

"Unlike 80 years ago, when Jews were murdered, when synagogues were destroyed and businesses were shattered, when the community called this time, the police didn't turn their back, they ran in to help," Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, in the Jewish News Syndicate (pull quote)

Peduto also placed prayers from Tree of Life families at the historic Western Wall, a place that's considered holy for its connection to the Jewish faith.
