Man Gets First Birthday Party At Age 31

When he thought he had nobody, a very special person from his past stepped in and gave him a new life.

Imagine being thirty years old and having never celebrated your birthday... or Christmas... or Thanksgiving... or any other holiday. That's what life was like for Chris Barrington of Waco, TX.

In June, he was found walking alone down a Texas highway by the Gatesville Sheriff's Department. Barrington has special needs. When they asked if he had any family, the only name that came to his mind was his former middle school teacher, Michell Girard (pictured below).

She taught him for four years, and even though they hadn't seen each other in over a decade, she was more than willing to help out.

"I said, 'What happens if I don't take him? Will he get in a group home?' [And] they said no, he'd go into an institution," Girard told KWTX . "I said not on my watch he's not."

After Barrington's father passed away from cancer on August 1, Girard went a step further and applied for legal guardianship. While the process can take some time, she's making sure he gets his chance to celebrate. The retired special education teacher has already thrown him his first birthday party, and he had his first boat ride on Lake Waco.

"He's never had a birthday present, a birthday party, he's never had Christmas, Thanksgiving, nothing," said Girard. "So this year is going to be full of firsts."
