Love Animals? They Need You at the Zoo
The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium has great hands-on volunteer opportunities for adults, teens, even divers who are allowed to "swim with the fishes."
We're starting to wind down Sparkt's "25 Days of Volunteering" and if you still want to get in some time before the holiday, you can find all of our volunteer suggestions under the recaps for Week 1 and Week 2.
At this point in the holiday season you may be thinking ahead to the new year and maybe making a resolution to find a good volunteer opportunity in 2019.
If you love animals, volunteering at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium might be just the opportunity for you (thanks to the zoo Facebook page for the great pictures!)
For adults, there are volunteer positions as Docents. These are people who conduct tours, assist at special events, even do observational research and take small zoo animals to community groups. To sign up or for more information, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 412-365-2524.
The zoo also uses Volunteer Divers to assist the PPG Aquarium staff with maintenance of the aquatic tanks and for special events. You must be SCUBA certified. Click here for a copy of the application, or e-mail the zoo if you're interested: email@example.com.
If you're a teen (or the parent of one) who loves animals and might even be considering a career as a veterinarian, vet tech, zoologist or animal trainer, the Zoo Teens summer volunteer program could be a perfect fit. Students 14-17 spend one day a week over 8 weeks at the zoo, helping care for small animals, staffing "touch tables," assisting with Zoo Camp and at the Kids Kingdom exhibit.
Registration is ONE DAY ONLY January 2nd from 7am-7pm! Applications won't be accepted any other day. Check back on this webpage January 2 for the application.
