Help Your Neighbors Stay Warm This Winter

As the temperature drops the access to home heat can mean the difference between life and death. Here's how you can help.

Just as the temperatures have dropped into the teens and twenties, it's a perfect time for the annual "Cool Down For Warmth" event from the Dollar Energy Fund.

The organization has been raising money to help people in need get their utilities turned on and keep them on, which is especially critical in times of severe temperatures.

Here's an inside look at the building of this year's ice house and what it's all about.

Since 1983, they've been able to proved more than $150 million dollars in grants to more than half a million families. The Dollar Energy Fund helps people in the following states: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, California, Connecticut and Indiana. The organization is partnered with Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Peoples Natural Gas, Duquesne Light and FirstEnergy. Anyone needing assistance can call 1-800-683-7036.

The Cool Down For Warmth event kicks off with the building of this year's ice house at Pittsburgh's Market Square. It's a 20 foot x 50 foot house made of solid blocks of ice. It started in 2015 with a one room structure, but has grown to multiple rooms and even a garage.

Event Schedule: Thursday January 23 & Friday January 24

7am – 3pm: Ice House Open to Public

Every individual and team who signed up through CrowdRise is assigned a 30-minute slot to sit in the ice house and continue to raise money and awareness for our neighbors in need. Once they reach their goal, they can vacate the house and “feel the warmth." Everyone and anyone is welcome to tour the ice house. Donations appreciated!

9am – 3pm: 3WS Music

3WS Pittsburgh will be on site throughout the event. Tune in to 94.5!

11:30am – 1:30pm: Bowls for Warmth Soup Tasting, presented by BNY Mellon*

Local restaurants will participate in a soup challenge, serving cups of soup to the lunchtime crowd in Market Square. Tickets will be sold for $10 and attendees get to sample three soups from participating vendors and vote for their favorite! CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO.

*Soup is only available while supplies last. First come, first served!
