Help People Who Can't Afford to Eat Healthier

By their calculations, about 75 percent of the people served at the The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank eat unhealthy foods because they can't afford healthier options.

Sparkt is spending the month of December letting you know about some of the coolest local volunteer opportunities we've found, so you can give back a little of yourself this holiday season.

By their calculations, about 75 percent of the people served at the The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank eat unhealthy foods because they can't afford healthier options. That's why the Food Bank started the "Produce to People" program, which distributes fresh produce, like potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, sweet potatoes and apples, to people in need.

There are eight produce distribution locations across southwestern Pennsylvania. Volunteers are always needed to help get people registered and hand out the produce.

Click here for more information on "Produce to People." You can email the Food Bank at VolOps@pittsburghfoodbank.org or call 412-745-7600 to volunteer.
