Florida Couple Requests School Supplies as Wedding Gifts
The couple stocked their registry with school supplies, uniforms to donate to a local elementary school.
A Florida couple wanted to find a way to give back when they celebrated their wedding this summer--so they had a special request for their guests.
So Matt and Kelli asked that in lieu of gifts, their family and friends donate school supplies and clothing for students in their area.
The cause was personal for the couple--Kelli is a first-grade teacher at Roland Park Magnet School.
The couple says the request went better than they could have expected, with more than 70 guests stuffing backpacks full of school supplies, school uniforms, water bottles, cleaning supplies and other essentials.
According to Fox 13, the items were donated to Booker T. Washington Elementary school in Tampa, a high poverty-rate school.
"Being a teacher, I know a lot of kids come with nothing to school," Kelli said through tears. "And you see the kids so excited about the little things: a backpack, or new shoes. It's so important that they can start school excited."
"I wasn't a fan of the whole wedding gift idea, or wedding in general, so to me it was good because she thought it was an awesome idea and I did too, so it just worked out well," Matt Cameron said.
