Everyday Heroes

City Thanks Employee Who Worked 32 Hours During Flood

When they heard that he lost his car during the flood, they came up with a great way to show their appreciation.

We first introduced you to Satchel Smith in an earlier Sparkt story about the kindness he showed toward guests who were stranded at a Homewood Suites hotel during tropical storm Imelda: Hotel Employee Praised After Working 32 Hours Straight During Tropical Storm

While the storm was causing power outages and flooding major roadways, Smith handled the hotel's phones, cooked meals for the guests, and basically ran the hotel by himself until his co-workers could get there to help.

Smith's story made national news when one of the hotel's guests shared his photo to Facebook along with a post praising his efforts to handle all of his duties with "a beautiful smile on his face."

Unfortunately, Smith's car was ruined in the storm that day, and it has put a burden on him to find transportation to and from work and school every day.

Well, it looks like that problem has been taken care of since city officials in Beaumont, TX surprised Smith with a new car earlier this month. Texas senator Brandon Creighton led a ceremony at the home of Dr. Ray Callas where they presented Smith with a proclamation from the Texas Senate along with a new 2013 hybrid Honda Insight.

A grinning Smith told reporters he was thankful for the generous gift, but he was "just doing his job."

"I mean it was a bit unexpected, overwhelming." he told KFDM News . "I mean I don't expect anything for what I did."

After a marathon 32-hour shift where he was able to act with grace and kindness without a wink of sleep, we think Smith more than deserves a new set of wheels.
