Catch and Release: Record Breaking Catfish Returned to River
It's a fish tale one man and his 8-year-old nephew will never forget
This is what it looks like when a day fishing becomes a BIG day fishing. 54 year-old Jeff Bonawitz was out on a boat with his 8 year-old nephew, Dylan, and a friend on the Susquehanna River.
"I had a bite and let the fish toy with it for a few minutes. When I finally pulled, it just bent the rod straight down. I could tell it was big." - Jeff Bonawitz
Jeff tells the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission that they had already hauled in some 30-pounders before reeling in this whopper. The fish in this picture is real and yes, it's really big too. Just how big? 50 pounds, 7 ounces. The Flathead Catfish was officially caught on April 6th, but had to be kept in a cooler overnight until it was weighed in for the record.
This behemoth isn't going to anyone's dinner table anytime soon. Jeff, with Dylan's help (as seen in the picture above) set it free.
"It was such an amazing fish, I thought the best thing to do was put it back so that maybe the next guy could catch it." - Jeff Bonawitz
