9/11 Volunteer's Widow Fights For Compensation Following Husband's Death

Margaret Ursta talks about life after losing her husband Nick to mesothelioma and her attorney updates the pending case, plus why he believes in doing good with his law firm.

Hey folks, I wanted to get an update and catch up on a case that's near and dear to my heart... the death of Nick Ursta.

We lost Nick in October after a relatively short battle with mesothelioma. Doctors tell us his cancer was caused by the toxins at Ground Zero in New York City following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Nick and his wife Margaret were there with the White Oak, PA Rescue Company, digging through the rubble and treating victims and survivors at the scene.

Pending Lawsuit: 9/11 Victims Fund

It took 17 years for Nick to develop the cancer that eventually took his life. Throughout their journey, the Ursta's never received any financial or medical help from the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund that was established to assist first-responders who answered the call to help in New York. That's why attorney Eric Chaffin and his team at Chaffin Luhana have stepped in to help.

I recently talked to Eric on my KDKA Radio talk show about the status of the Ursta's case and also why he believes in helping people and doing the right thing. We also caught up with Margaret Ursta to find out how she's doing.

I can't thank Eric and his team enough for the work and love they're showing to the Ursta family. The same goes to everyone who has helped along the way as we helped build their dream home. It was Nick's last wish for his beloved, and she plans to remain in the home they started building together.

Special Thanks

Below is a short list, but not necessarily a complete one of the many volunteers, organizations, and businesses who've given their time, money, physical labor, or all of the above.

  • GoFundMe Donations: Thank you to everyone who pitched in to see that Nick had a proper burial and resting place. Together we raised more than $14,000 dollars.
  • TUDI Mechanical Systems: They installed a brand new furnace and donated the entire system as part of their 2018 Heat For The Needy program.
  • Kevin Anglum and Tony Napolitano: These retired contractors have done the walls and ceilings drywall and sheet rock with additional volunteer assistance from the Carpenters and Joiners Union .
  • Maury Burgwin, President of the Mon Yough Area Chamber of Commerce : Burgwin worked with area businesses on materials and labor.
  • Anonymous: A mystery man paid for the roofing job installed by Nicolella Roofing .
  • Matt Mertz Plumbing : They have done a complete job of running all of the plumbing and making sure it's all up to code. Lisa and Matt also donated $8,000 to pay for funeral arrangements.
  • Michael Jacobs, President and Owner of Marvista Kitchen and Bath . Jacobs' team put together the dream kitchen and bathrooms for Nick and Margaret.
  • 84 Lumber donated the siding and materials to finish the exterior of the Ursta home.
  • Richard Garland and his volunteers from The Blessing Board installed siding on all sides of the Ursta home.
  • Dan Horhut and his crew from Horthut Tree Experts cleaned up the piles and piles of debris from the trees and shrubbery that was removed from the yard.
  • Pat Molyneaux and his team at Molyneaux Tile Carpet Wood took care of carpeting throughout the home.
  • Levin Furniture and an anonymous donor provided furnishings for the home: living room, dining room, and bedroom.
  • Voss TV & Appliance : Matt Hufford and the rest of the family at Voss really stepped up to take care of the television and appliances.
