Mission: 10K Masks

People In Need Line Up For Food And Face Masks

We partnered with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to distribute thousands of face masks as part of our "Mission: 10K Facemasks" campaign.

A steady rain didn't dampen the sense of community -- and the feeling of gratitude outside PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh Friday. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank was staging another one of its mass food distributions with enough dry goods, frozen food, meat and milk to feed 1,000 families.

This isn't the Food Bank's first distribution at the arena since the pandemic started, but it might have been the best so far in terms of what folks received. People who came to this food distribution got free face masks, as part of Sparkt's Mission: 10K Facemasks. We've promised to give away ten thousand masks in one week to keep people in the area safe, and help get our lives back to normal as quickly as possible.

While people know they're supposed to be wearing a mask when they're out in in public, many can't afford them, just like they can't afford to feed their families because of layoffs and cutbacks caused by the COVID-10 pandemic. Watch as the Food Bank and Sparkt teamed up to help:

A steady stream of cars kept coming right up until the end of the 2-hour distribution, which included a box filled with fresh fruits and vegetables provided as part of the new Farmers to Families program.

The program is meant to fix the problem created in our nation's food chain by the closure of restaurants, hotels and other food service businesses. Federal money goes to local food distributors who purchase produce and other perishable food products from local farmers and then provide it to food banks. The food banks then distriute the food -- which might otherwise have gone to waste -- to people who need it.

Volunteers did a great job of quickly packing boxes of food, including fresh produce, into the back of people's cars and sending them on their way.Sparkt

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will distribute 1.3 million pounds of fresh produce each month over the next 6 months as part of the Farmers to Families program

"This is a great testament to Pittsburgh at its best," said Food Bank Executive Director Lisa Scales.

"With a boost from the federal government we're coming together to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to our neighbors in need."

Sparkt also got a "boost" from our partners, attorneys Eric Chaffin from Chaffin-Luhana and Julian Gray from Julian Gray and Associates. They stepped up with the money to buy 10,000 face masks for neighbors who can't find or afford them. Every car that came through Friday's food distribution got four of those face masks.

Each car got a gift bag with four free face masks inside, along with three boxes of food.Sparkt

We're giving away face masks all week, starting with the Boys & Girls Club Thursday, and continuing with Friday's Food Bank distribution. Keep checking back here at Sparkt to find out where we'll be next week!.

In the meantime, here are some more scenes from the event at PPG Paints Arena.
